Nikon marketed the Coolpix 700 and 950 earlier in 1999 to reach a wide audience by introducing an entry-level digital camera and a professonial consumer camera. To reach the "middle-class" Nikon marketed the Coolpix 800. The camera was announced 1999-09-27. The camera was to close the gap between the less popular Coolpix 700 and the more popular Coolpix 950. It featured everything from the Coolpix 700 plus an improved Nikkor lens and the double zoom.
